Mexican scientists' plan to convert conventional to electric cars

Previously on Webirix we have talked about the costs of a Tesla and also the interesting way it has iconstant income cleaning up the sins of conventional shipowners: Selling them green bonds that he has to spare, thanks to Elon Musk's investments in solar panels and clean energy, in addition to the tax benefits for exclusively producing electric cars.

While the Tesla are far away for the bulk of Mexicans, scientists in our country have thought of a way to mitigate the damage to the environment through a process of converting common cars to electric.

This says the Agency ID bulletin about the precarious air situation, which has caused havoc in metropolises such as CDMX with its recurring environmental contingencies:

Every year seven million people die in the world due to poor air quality caused by air pollution, according to the World Health Organization (WHO). In addition, it is estimated that 24 percent of diseases and 23 percent of deaths can be attributed to environmental factors. Given the pollution situation, Mexican researchers convert internal combustion cars to electric cars, which generate economic savings and favor air quality.

The Mexican Invention

Héctor Ruiz García, director of the High Performance Automotive company that converts automobiles, explained that it is about the transformation to electricity that does not pollute, using lithium or lead acid batteries connected in series to form banks whose voltage ranges from 48 to 144 volts, which determine the speed of the car. With this technology, the unit runs above 100 kilometers per hour, ideal for urban areas where the maximum regulated is 40 to 80 kilometers, for example in Mexico City.

Another benefit is financial savings. "For example, we have already verified that with the expenditure of 500 pesos a week in gasoline for an internal combustion car, with the electric one the same amount is used but bimonthly, which translates into a performance equivalent to one hundred kilometers per liter, paying electricity instead of gasoline.

To achieve these benefits, what we do is that a compact vehicle, with 130 thousand pesos, we convert it into electric in a week. We put the motor, the controller, the batteries, the adapter plate to the transmission, the power wiring and the charger so that people can have a vehicle ready to drive, ”said Ruiz García, a graduate in Computer Science from UNAM.

The conversion process begins with the removal of the internal combustion engine, then the adaptation of the electric motor to the old vehicle is designed, then the space that will house the battery bank is traced, that is, the equivalent of the gasoline tank of a car of internal combustion.

The transformation to electric cars began in 2011, when Héctor Ruiz realized that this conversion was feasible. "Currently the cost of new electric vehicles are not accessible, it exceeds half a million pesos, this awakened the desire for society to have access to this technology."

After deciding to convert a car to electric, university entrepreneurs deliver the vehicle with a charger, which can be connected to any existing socket; as well as advice for registering with the corresponding authorities and having permission to circulate daily.

With a life span of more than ten years, the Mexican company dedicated to transformation is located in the State of Mexico and also offers engine maintenance, required for the first 80 thousand kilometers of use.

At the moment, the technology has already been tested in ten vehicles, "there is no limitation in the size of the car, only that the larger the size, a greater investment is required, but we can make any conversion," he added.

They are also in the process of registering the charger's patent, which was designed by the team. “The importance of these conversions to electric cars lies in showing that this is a technology available to everyone; our intention is that the vehicle fleet is not increased, but that the existing and obsolete ones be reused to generate both economic, social and environmental benefits ”, concluded Héctor Ruiz García.
