The Mexican children who took silver in the International Mathematical Olympiad in the United Kingdom

Mexico won a silver medal, three bronze and two honorable mentions at the 60th International Mathematics Olympiad (IMO) held at the University of Bath, United Kingdom. The awards will be held next Sunday, July 21.

The team, whose plane tickets were financed by the filmmaker Guillermo del Toro, is made up of six high school students who have been preparing for several years in the educational program of the Mexican Mathematics Olympiad promoted by the Mexican Mathematical Society.

They are: Bruno Gutiérrez Chávez, originally from Colima, who won the silver medal; Ana Paula Jiménez Díaz and Tomás Cantú Rodríguez, both from Mexico City and for whom it is their first participation in the IMO, and Eric Hernández Palacios, from Nuevo León, all three won bronze medals; as well as Pablo Valeriano Quiroz from Nuevo León and Diego Hinojosa Téllez from Jalisco, recognized with honorable mention.

With 111 points obtained in the exam, the Mexican team ranked third in the Ibero-American region (preceded by Peru and Brazil), and in 41st place out of 114 participating countries in what is considered the most important mathematics competition in the world.

Bruno, 18, has participated in the academic program of the Mexican Mathematics Olympiad since 2014. In 2016 he obtained a silver medal in the Central American and Caribbean Mathematical Olympiad; individual bronze medal and team silver medal at the International Mathematics Competition (held in Thailand), among other international recognitions. He is also passionate about physics, in 2018 he won a bronze medal at the National Physics Olympiad. For his work as a coach of children and young people in the area of mathematics, he was awarded in 2016 and 2018 with the state and national youth awards, respectively.

Ana Paula, 17, won a gold medal at the European Women's Mathematics Olympiad (EGMO, for its acronym in English, held in Ukraine) in April. Last year in Zurich, Switzerland, also at the EGMO, he won a silver medal. It's karate black belt.

Tomás, 17, won in 2018 a gold medal at the Central American and Caribbean Mathematical Olympiad (OMCC whose headquarters was Cuba), and a bronze medal at the International Mathematics Competition (IMC) held in Bulgaria. He also plays the violin wonderfully.

Eric, 17, began his Olympic career at WMO in 2013. In 2016 he began his participation in international competitions. He won a gold medal at the 2017 OMCC, and a silver medal at the IMC held in India. In his spare time he makes electronic music.

17-year-old Pablo started at WMO in 2015. The following year he won a gold medal in Bulgaria in the Mathematics Without Borders competition. In 2017 he obtained bronze at the IMC held in India and gold, with a perfect exam at the OMCC. Last year in his first participation in the IMO he obtained bronze. He likes soccer and plays the guitar.

Diego, 18, started in the Mathematics Olympics when he was in fifth grade, has participated in international competitions of that discipline in Argentina (silver medal), China (honorable mention), Thailand (bronze), Jamaica (gold), Portugal and Spain (silver, in the Ibero-American Mathematics Olympiad). In August he enters the university where he will study economics and applied mathematics.

About the Mexican Mathematics Olympiad
The Mexican Mathematics Olympiad is a program of the Mexican Mathematical Society, created in 1987. One of its main objectives is to promote the study of mathematics in a creative way among pre-university students, to develop the reasoning and imagination of the young participants, with a focus away from the traditional, beyond memorization and mechanization in the teaching of mathematics.
