But there are still a multitude of things that are bad for him. The next big goal for AI researchers is to develop a more general system that performs well in many tasks rather than one with superhuman ability for just one task.

Using this approach, Facebook Research researcher Arthur Szlam and his colleagues began work on an AI assistant capable of interacting with humans and then performing a wide range of tasks on demand. The key to your system is that it can learn from your interactions and, therefore, increase the range of tasks that it is capable of performing.

The medium that Szlam and his colleagues have chosen to achieve this goal is Minecraft, a 3D video game that allows players to explore, build, create and even fight in a world on-line unique and unlimited. It is also the best-selling video game of all time, with more than 170 million copies. More than 90 million people play it every month.

But what makes it useful for AI research is that while the Minecraft universe offers endless variety, its rules are simple and predictable within certain limits. AI researchers have already started using it to train and test various types of AI systems.

The full report, here, via MIT Tech Review x The Arxiv

Artificial intelligence (AI) has outperformed humans at a variety of tasks, from video games to facial recognition.
