Consume more or less meat?

What are the consequences of eating only vegetables? Mariana Isabel Valdés Moreno, head of the Nutriology career at the Faculty of Higher Studies, Zaragoza campus of the UNAM, explained that this food is essential in the diet because it has nutritional characteristics such as iron, in addition to providing fat.

According to the interviewee, iron serves to constitute a part of muscle mass, in addition, it transports oxygen throughout the body through erythrocytes. "If I don't have enough iron, I will have anemia problems."

In fact, the lack of iron affects women in fertility and in children in their cognitive or intellectual development, added the university academic. The absence of protein can cause amenorrhea (absence of menstruation), weakness, anemia, and other consequences.

Thus, meat, be it beef, pork, chicken or fish, is a good source of protein. And although this chemical is found in other food sources, it is not so easily absorbed by the human body.

In fact, it is found in legumes and cereals, but they must be combined for the body to take advantage of them. For example, mix beans with corn and lentils with rice. "If amino acids are not combined in that way, they do not conjugate to form proteins."

Do I eat more or less meat?

If a person wants to be vegan, it is advisable to consult a specialist: "if he is unaware of his state of health and undertakes a restrictive diet or eating plan, he is likely to be in danger."

On the other hand, eating red meat in excess also has its cons: it has a high cholesterol content that can develop hypercholesterolemia. This represents a risk of suffering a cardiovascular heart attack.

If it is a question of eating chicken or fish in excess, the risk is lower: but the person will generate a surplus of nitrogenous proteins that are excreted through the urine and that must pass through the kidney. "In this case there is a risk if you have a predisposition or kidney disease," he concluded.
