Marisol Maldonado Olmos She is 24 years old, is a Mechatronics engineer from the Faculty of Engineering (FI) of the UNAM, and creator of the channel Youtube Steps through Engineering, educational project of multimedia content for students of the Physical-Mathematical area.
His videos present basic science tutorials such as algebra, linear algebra, differential calculus, integral calculus; In addition, they address engineering topics such as statics, electronics, thermodynamics, digital and electrical circuits, among others.
Marisol said that Steps through Engineering It arose when I was in the fifth semester of the Mechatronics Engineering career. At the time, she was helping one of her cousins solve her math homework.
“What I did was review your doubts and write down the steps on a piece of paper, record it and send it by WhatsApp. She shared it with her colleagues and it also helped them to solve their doubts, that's why I thought it was a good idea to upload it to Youtube to help more people ”.
He highlighted that mathematics is solved with a certain methodology, that is, "through steps" until the problem is solved.
The university student shared that when planning her videos she uses the IF agenda, and expressed that it is important to go from the base to the most complex. Its methodology consists of reviewing the topics with different books, making summaries, design and practice of draft exercises.
"I started making my videos on a white board, but it took me a long time, now I have a tripod parallel to my desk and a notebook in which I write all the exercises," said the engineer.
Steps through Engineering has 560 videos on the platform Google, more than eight million views and 110 thousand subscribers. "Reaching this number filled me with a lot of emotion and motivation to continue with the project," Marisol said.
In three and a half years, Steps through Engineering It has grown exponentially, which has allowed it to reach Spain, Venezuela, Colombia, the United States and England. "My largest audience is between 16 and 25 years old and they belong to different careers such as Administration, Medicine, Law or Economics, among others."
Despite the fact that entertainment content predominates on the internet, in October 2018 Youtubeannounced an investment of 20 million dollars for its project YouTube Learning.
According to data from Susan Wojcicki, CEO of Youtube, in the last two years the 70 percent of userss watched videos to learn something new. Also, with this investment Google supports the Edutubers with training in different branches, as well as workshops to help you speak in front of the cameras.
If you want to start a channel in Youtube, Marisol He recommended doing it because you like it regardless of the fact that there are more videos on the same topic, "because you will have a different way of communicating knowledge."
This year, the Edutuber He will study a master's degree in Electrical Control Engineering at the FI, and will also give lectures at the Carlos Slim Foundation's Digital Village and at the Anáhuac University of Tampico. Likewise, it will participate in the Talent Land 2020, an innovation and technology event that takes place every year in Guadalajara.
