It is said that, today, anyone with a smartphone is a photographer. This is true, since they all exercise the activity of taking photos, but it is debatable, since most of the photos uploaded to social networks lack any type of structure or suggestion. After looking at these photographs, all taken on iPhones, a huge gap opens up between those with an eye for form (albeit on a subject as worn as a lying dog) and those without a compositional talent.
The iPhone Photography Awards (IPPAWARDS) started in 2007 and is the longest-running dedicated iPhone competition to date. Thousands of people from all over the world submit their images within any of the 17 categories such as Animals, Children, Sunsets and Trees. Obviously, all must be taken with an iPhone and cannot be altered with Photoshop or any editing program. However, iPhone application filters are allowed.
