420,000 connected computers create this map of the Internet

The network of networks is already an almost main medium for the flow of information and a somewhat particular investigation shows this. To do this, the researcher, whose identity is unknown, has used 420,000 connected computers and after 9 months has reached interesting conclusions.

In order to collect the information, this researcher has used Carna, a botnet that infected these 420,000 computers, giving him total control. Although it is an illegal method, the author of the investigation warned the owners of the equipment of what he was doing through a file that contained a brief explanation of what they were doing and a contact email address in case they wanted to stop take part. Something unconventional and that of course has led to one of the conclusions of this study.

Thanks to the monitoring of these computers, it has been possible to build this map of Internet use. A kind of census that has yielded such curious data as that there are at least 4,200 million computers connected to the network of networks and at least 1,300 million IP addresses. This only taking into account those that are IPv4.

What is worrying is the ease with which it is possible to infect and control computers, something that shows little or no concern for the security of the owners. Leaving passwords and default settings can be the main reason why we can have a zombie computer. However, the data that Carna has collected is very curious and interesting.

You can see the procedure and the research results here.
